Vintage Wood Birds from the 1930's

from $60.00

Maine, 1930’s

I have a thing about birds, I love the quirkiness of some and the whimsy of others—the way they all fall in line and the way they work as a team. ( I actually documented a bird couple building their nest, hatching the eggs and caring the young).

My love of birds carried over into passion for wooden birds.  Bird carving has a long history starting with the carving of decoys and evolving into a genre of decorative birds.  These small pieces of art were carved during the depression years of the 1930” s.  The colors of some are muted like the dustbowls of the Midwest and others bright and colorful --uplifting the spirit and the soul.

They soar through the sky with their elegant wings or hop cheerfully along a branch. Just imagine how they allow you to dream when you look at them or make you smile when you see them perched on your shelf.
