A diminutive covered jar animated by hand-painted figures, birds, flowers and winding green ornament on a warm gilded ground. The fitted lid and gold-rimmed edges reward close looking; its original use, perhaps for scent or a personal possession, is not certain.
Curator’s Notes
I love the density of detail contained in such a small object. Its character comes from time spent looking rather than from scale.
